I've been thinking about drawing lately and after managing to find a blank piece of paper (the boys are drawing mad so blank paper is rare) I started this illustration and finished it this morning.
I'm wondering if I feel a bit squished. I think perhaps I do. It's hard to slow down. It's hard not to wish time away. I always feel a bit funny with a small baby. A bit lonely but not sad, just different.
I think there might be a series of squished girls.
Oh and while we're here, if anyone has any tricky tricks to trick a tiny girl into thinking their mama is holding her while she sleeps but really she's not, please share.
Happy weekend :)

Thinking...

Hey Sam, I think I felt the same with babies, lonely but not sad. A long way away from 'regular' stuff. I use to trick Sam like a puppy. I wrapped a quietly ticking clock in clothes I had been wearing. Worked for months.

A beautiful illustration Sam, I love that tiny detail of her two eyelashes going out of the frame.
ReplyDeleteOur little one didn't want to sleep during the day (night-time was fine) unless she was being held. There was a lot of sling wearing in our house so that I could get things done.

A warmish wheat bag wrapped around her so she can feel the pressure like she would if you had your hand on her. With Sax I would start with my hand and then slowly replace it with the wheat bag(and try putting her on her side not back)
ReplyDeleteI'll swap you for a 4 year old that has been up since 5am and wants to go to the monster trucks tonight but wont go and have a sleep :(
I don't REALLY suggest it, but when I had my Zac I had the same problem, and i searched and found this http://www.pregnancystore.com/zaky.html
ReplyDeleteFREAKY!!!
it is such a unique time having a newborn, you kind of feel lost but right at home and whole all in the same breath!? maybe?
I've been putting wraps in the bed with us of night after they come off the line so that they get our smell. I've also been putting a hotwater bottle in the crib so that it is warm when I put him down (obviously I take the hot water bottle out!) ... my thinking is it is like body-warmth.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't always work. But hey... anything is worth a try hey?
